Dotsero Southern KDSR FM Radio

The little known, curious case of a railroad radio station.

While it won't at first sound weird for a railroad to have a radio frequency, it's more shocking to find out a railroad hosts it's own radio station. During the late 1990s through the late 2000s, Dotsero Southern had hosted an FM radio station in select yards. These served crews operating in dispatch offices, corporate buildings and in some cases, locomotives. The purpose of which was to help crews stay alert and awake, while also keeping moral high.

Location Frequency End of Operation
Grand Junction 95.5 FM February 1st, 2009
Glenwood Springs 95.9 FM February 1st, 2009
Aspen 101.7 FM December 12th, 2002
Leadville 98.9 FM September 1st, 2008
Salida 107.9 FM September 1st, 2008
Pueblo 92.1 FM September 1st, 2008

Some have noted the odd ending dates for certain regions, including Aspen. These dates do relate to a internal region, specifically two seperate areas which were hosted as such, separately. Region "A" consisted of Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs and Aspen. Region "B" consisted of Leadville, Salida and Pueblo. Aspen was a special case, notably ending much earlier than the others, this is due to the city of Aspen wanting the railroad to remove it's radio antenna... primarily for looks. The railroad did continue to host a private radio over a low-energy setup in the yard, but this was no longer on the same FM band but rather an unused crew radio.

While under one name, the two regions were for splitting up weather data. Region "A" would start from Grand Junction and end with Aspen, Region "B" would start from Pueblo and end with Leadville. This allow for less downtime between music, while also not requiring as many radio hosts. Two hosts would run the radio station, one located in Glenwood Springs, the other in Salida. As you can imagine, both regions would adopt different musical tastes and styles, though only using music approved by Dotsero Southern. Most of the music played would be country and classic rock songs, though on some occasions radio hosts could play their own selection of songs.

In the end, the railroad radio station would play it's final song in February of 2009. The last song played over Region "A" was "The Song is Over" by The Who, while Region "B" had closed out with "Rocky Mountain High" by John Denver.

Even though the radio station is gone, crews are still allowed to bring music with them while in yards. There are many rules on loudness and when it's appropriate, but it helps to make the day go by just a little bit faster, as was the original intention of a railroad radio station.
