The Dotsero Southern ordered 29 B39-8 locomotives in September 1986. These units were delivered between November 1986 and January 1987.
The B39-8 locomotives were bought along side the GP60 locomotives in an effort to gain more modern power for increased train lengths. 4 axle power was prefered at the time due to it's capability to keep trains running at a higher speed.
These were the last units to recieve both horizontal top and nose lights, with the nose light being a gyralight. Overtime modifications would be made to each unit, including the addition of ditchlights and PTC antennas being installed on the roof. Locomotives were ordered with AC units on top of the cab but when PTC antennas were being installed, the AC unit was relocated behind the conductor chair outside the cab. The Gyralight is kept on all units to this day other than #3004 which had it patched over due to the motor burning out. Of the 29 units ordered, only 10 units numbered #3000-#3009 continue to operate with the rest ending up in storage or being sold by 1993. In 2000 these remaining units would be the testbed for a new variation of the paint scheme, being dubbed "wings." All the DSRR B39-8 locomotives would be given Nathan K5LA horns. This K5LA horn would be mounted just forward of the exhaust on the long hood.
The B39-8 locomotives have seen many issues over the years, only being solved on the 10 units that continue to operate today. The 10 units, #3000-#3009, had their electronics replaced with more reliable versions bought from General Electric in 1995.
