The Dotsero Southern ordered 15 GP60 locomotives in September 1986. These units were delivered between November 1986 and December 1986.
The GP60 locomotives were bought along side the B39-8 locomotives in an effort to gain more modern power for increased train lengths. 4 axle power was prefered at the time due to it's capability to keep trains running at a higher speed.
All locomotives were ordered with a vertical gyralight on the nose and a horizontal headlight on the roof. Overtime modifications would be made to each unit, including the addition of ditchlights, PTC antennas being installed on the roof, and auto engine shutoff. The Gyralight is kept on all units to this day. Of the 15 units ordered, 10 would have parts used from the traded in GP40 units, notably #1990 would end up using doors from #1976, leading to #1990 being painted into the same bicentennial scheme as the former GP40. #1990 would be repainted to the standard scheme in 2004, when the rest of the fleet would have the "wings" paint scheme applied. All the DSRR GP60 locomotives would be given Nathan K5LA horns with the 4th and 2nd bells being reversed. This K5LA horn would be mounted just behind the cab on the roof.
The GP60 locomotives started the trend of horizontal nose lights, rather than the previous horizontal nose light.
The GP60 locomotives currently haven't had any major issues across the network, only having paint fade due to heat from the exhaust. These locomotives have been a reliable workhorse for the DSRR.
