The Dotsero Southern ended up leasing 9 SD9 locomotives between 1992 and 1993. These were leased from the National Railway Equipment company.
The SD9s were leased as a stop gap measure between the poorly running B39-8s and the new SD60Ms. The specific units leased were perviously owned by the Denver and Rio Grande Western who had sold these units 5 months earlier. Due to these being leased, the units were never painted past patched over Rio Grande logos.
As these units were leased to the DSRR, plows weren't required for these units to lead. The light spec on the units, other than #5310, were seen as a visability concern. As such, these engines were limited to 20mph over grade crossings.
In the end, these units were returned to NRE in December of 1993 and scrapped shortly after.
